Trakt Setup
Connect your Trakt account to receive watch history from your media servers and streaming services.
What is Trakt?
Trakt is a platform that keeps track of the TV shows and movies you watch. It integrates with many apps and services to automatically log your viewing history, provide recommendations, and let you discover new content.
Prerequisites
- A Trakt account (sign up free)
- Trakt VIP is not required for basic scrobbling (VIP unlocks extra Trakt features)
Connecting Trakt
- Go to Connections in the Plaxt dashboard
- Click Connect Trakt
- You’ll be redirected to Trakt to authorize
- Click Yes to grant Plaxt access
- You’ll be redirected back to Plaxt
Your Trakt account is now connected and ready to receive scrobbles.
What Gets Synced
When connected to a source, Plaxt syncs:
- Movies — Title, year, watched timestamp
- TV Episodes — Show, season, episode, watched timestamp
- Watch status — Marks items as watched on Trakt
Scrobbling Behavior
Plaxt follows Trakt’s scrobbling protocol:
- Start — When you begin watching (shows as “watching now”)
- Pause — When you pause playback
- Stop — When you finish or stop watching (marks as watched if >80% complete)
This means your friends can see what you’re currently watching on your Trakt profile.
Creating a Sync Link
To start syncing to Trakt:
- Go to Dashboard → Create Sync Link
- Select your source (e.g., Plex)
- Select your Trakt connection as the destination
- Choose which user to sync (if applicable)
- Configure options (movies, TV shows)
- Click Create
History Sync
Sync your existing watch history:
- Open your sync link
- Click Sync History
- Plaxt will fetch history from your source and mark items as watched on Trakt
Note: This won’t create duplicate entries—Trakt handles deduplication automatically.
Collection Sync
Plaxt can automatically add items from your media library to your Trakt collection. This is separate from scrobbling — your collection represents what you own, while your history represents what you’ve watched.
How It Works
When a new item is added to your media server library (e.g., a new movie in Plex), Plaxt automatically adds it to your Trakt collection. This keeps your Trakt collection in sync with your actual library.
Toggling Collection Sync
Collection sync is enabled by default. To disable it:
- Open your sync link details
- Find the Collection Management section
- Toggle the switch off
When disabled, new library items will not be added to your Trakt collection. Scrobbling (watch history) is unaffected.
Manual Collection Management
You can also manage your collection manually from the sync link details page:
- Sync — Performs a full sync of your library to your Trakt collection
- Cleanup — Removes items from your Trakt collection that are no longer in your library
Trakt’s Auto-Collection on Scrobble
Note that Trakt itself may add items to your collection when a scrobble completes, depending on your Trakt account settings. This is a Trakt-side behavior and is independent of Plaxt’s collection sync. You can control this in Trakt Settings.
Multi-Account Support
If you have multiple Trakt accounts:
- Connect each Trakt account separately
- Create different sync links for each account
- Map different source users to different Trakt accounts
Privacy Settings
Control what’s shared on Trakt:
- Go to Trakt Settings
- Adjust privacy options for your watching activity
- Plaxt respects your Trakt privacy settings
Troubleshooting
Authorization failed
- Make sure you clicked “Yes” on the Trakt authorization page
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting
- Clear your browser cookies and try again
Scrobbles not appearing
- Check the event log in your sync link
- Verify the source is properly connected
- Ensure you watched past the 80% threshold
Duplicate entries
- Trakt automatically deduplicates—duplicates are rare
- If you see duplicates, check if you have multiple sync links to the same Trakt account
- Contact support if the issue persists
Trakt Features
Once connected, you can use Trakt features like:
- Calendar — See upcoming episodes for shows you watch
- Progress — Track your progress through TV series
- Recommendations — Get suggestions based on your history
- Lists — Organize your watchlist and collections
- Stats — View your watching statistics
Best Practices
- Keep your Trakt account connected for automatic scrobbling
- Use history sync to backfill older watch history
- Check Trakt’s calendar for upcoming episodes of your shows
